Pendants & chandeliers

Add the room's length and width in metres. The result, in centimetres, is roughly the diameter of the fixture that will look right. A 3.6×4.3 m living room calls for a ~65 cm pendant.

Over a dining table

Hang 75–90 cm above the table top. The fixture should be 15–30 cm narrower than the table on each side.

Floor lamps

A reading lamp should put the bottom of the shade at eye level when seated — usually 145–160 cm overall height.

Table lamps

The bottom of the shade should sit at eye level beside a sofa or bed. Aim for a total height of 65–80 cm for nightstands.
