Pendants & chandeliers
Add the room's length and width in feet. The result, in inches, is roughly the diameter of the fixture that will look right. A 12×14 ft living room calls for a ~26" pendant.
Over a dining table
Hang 30–36" above the table top. The fixture should be 6–12" narrower than the table on each side.
Floor lamps
A reading lamp should put the bottom of the shade at eye level when seated — usually 58–64" overall height.
Table lamps
The bottom of the shade should sit at eye level beside a sofa or bed. Aim for a total height of 26–32" for nightstands.
